Why is Active Listening Necessary?
Active Listening is a skill that we can all benefit from improving. By becoming a better listener, you can improve your productivity, as well as your ability to influence, persuade and negotiate. What's more, you'll avoid conflict and misunderstandings.
The 3 'A's for active listening in practice
These are the 3 'A's that should be kept in mind for anyone attempting to gain admirable listening skills.
1) Attitude: keeping an open mind. Most of the times there are different ideas put forth by the team members. By keeping an open mind and attitude you may be able to work with something unique.
2) Attention: focus on the others. Yes, a lot of people have short attention spans. Activities like reading, and playing mindful games, help in regaining focus
3) Adjustment: how to 'go with the flow'. Rather than assuming the ideas the speaker is willing to put forth, adjustment allows the listener to adapt with what is happening.
Why it is important to listen actively
Active listening is the key for chairs. The chair must listen, summarize, and further ask follow-up questions. Doing so helps the speaker realize that the Chair is comprehensive to new ideas and available to listen. One thing that must be kept in mind though, is that s/he must understand the content of the input clearly in order to decide whether or not an action is to be taken.
